Peace in the Storm of Confusion

A good friend once declared that there was no reason to go to confession because nothing ever changes. She just has to confess the same sins over and over again. So, what was the point. To which I replied, “It’s way worse when you have something new to confess because then you begin to realize just how capable you are of doing just about anything, further establishing the need for a Savior.

Our young patient came to the clinic pregnant with the baby of the young man whom she loved. He was strong in the faith, and they had been together for a couple of years. During the intake conversation, the advocate learned that she had had 3 abortions… with no known physical or emotional ill effects. In the last abortion, she aborted the baby of her current boyfriend, whom she loves. Interiorly, the advocate wondered if it is truly possible to take innocent life with no consequences. Had man’s conscience become that corrupt.

Then we moved into the ultrasound room. Initially, the nurse gave the patient the opportunity to see the baby. As soon as the patient saw the baby on the screen, she began to get light-headed and almost passed out. She could not bear to look at the image or hear the heartbeat. In that moment of truth, the light shone in the darkness for her. For the first time, she faced what she had done so many years ago. She will continue with us throughout her prenatal care, which gives us the opportunity to lead her to Christ and His infinite mercy.
