“Choose Life!” (Deuteronomy 30:19)

This verse from Moses’s final discourse with the Israelites, establishes God’s will for the them to turn from evil to do good in the land God will give them. During our Lunch and Learn in August, Nyasia Hogan described her decision to “Choose Life” for her baby boy, after taking the first set of abortion pills. Following her talk, the audience gave her a standing ovation. Arson is never a good thing, but as with every evil, God can bring a greater good. In the case of the conflagration at Planned Parenthood in January of this year, God has brought a GREAT good out of that fire. I will share one of the stories.

Nyasia visited our clinic the week before the fire to get a health check before aborting her 7.5 week baby. Our advocate mentioned to her the possibility to reverse the abortion. The nurse performed the ultrasound, provided education, and we prayed with her, but as is the case with every human, Nyasia has free will. A few days later, she visited Planned Parenthood, received the first round of abortion pills, and began the abortion process.

The day following the fire, Nyasia had her second appointment at Planned Parenthood. It was raining, and the Uber driver dropped her off before she realized that Planned Parenthood was closed. She stopped in our clinic to get out of the rain while calling for another Uber driver to take her home. God sent that rain just for her and her son! Our receptionist welcomed her and invited her to take another ultrasound. Since she had time on her hands, Nyasia agreed.

She sat with the advocate who picked up the conversation from last week, and then together they went for an ultrasound. At only 8 weeks gestational age, the baby was moving all over! Nyasia could not believe how big he had grown in just 1 week. She realized that she could not go through with the abortion, and we began the reversal process. We were only able to begin the reversal protocol because we are a medical clinic. She had no small amount of trepidation.

We prayed more.

Nyasia would visit us weekly for many weeks. She soon began attending prenatal care with Dr. Jody Kelly, a very generous and rare obstetrician who is willing to see our patients, but Nyasia still liked to see her baby! So, every couple of weeks or so, she would be driving down Knoxville and think, “I could go see my baby!” She would pop into the clinic for an ultrasound. During one of these visits, we were able to get the most incredible 3D image of her little guy. Upon completion of the scan, Nyasia showed the photos to the director, and she just began crying and exclaimed, “You saved this baby’s life.” Nyasia who has a beautiful heart replied, “Miss Kate, do you need a hug?” She came around the corner and gave the director a hug who whispered to her, “Thank you for listening to the voice of the Holy Spirit!”

Only the Holy Spirit can convert a human soul.  It is VITAL that  we acknowledge God and give Him the glory for the many miracles He does.

At about 6 months into the pregnancy, the director asked Nyasia if this pregnancy had changed her mind about abortion.  She had not yet formed her thoughts on this and remained silent.  Trusting that God had a plan, the director asked her if she would be willing to speak at our luncheon.  She said YES and even found our caterer, her mom!

As her story unfolded, she described how she remained uncertain about the outcome of her little one for several weeks.  In fact, she made a second appointment at Planned Parenthood.  Fear of physical maladies gripped her, but every week we could bring her peace by showing her the ultrasound.

Finally, Nyasia described how incredibly amazing motherhood is. She expressed such great joy at having given birth and thankfulness that Planned Parenthood wasn’t open that day, but we were, thanks to our supporters.  Together we praised God for His goodness.

For our part, we are privileged to work with so many truly incredible young women!!
